Yes and no.Just update, if something is not working you can easily go back to the older version.
But most of the time it is some option from php that is not enabled if something is not working.
You can't lost data from update the php version.
Firstly, back up your database and website files to a safe place (like a hard drive or on your desktop, that should be fine). Then you can switch your php version to whatever you like. Obviously select a newer version.
Most web hosts will pre-select all of the libraries you need for each php version so it should be okay and everything should work without issue. However, check over everything and make sure it’s all in working order.
You may have extensions running that don’t work with newer versions. As far as I know phpBB is rated for 7.1 to 7.4 but 8.0 does introduce a lot of changes so be mindful when updating to it.
